Island Of Desire

Who knew this day would come?

One of Raft3r’s writings has found its way to the top news website in the Philippines! This is probably the closest thing I’ll ever get to being published.

Full and unedited text is below.

Online article, on the other hand, appears here.

Enjoy!

========

Confucius said it best: Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. I adhere to his philosophy.

My job has taken me all over the Philippines, most states in America and even to some remote parts of the Pacific like the Marshall Islands. Yup, I’m one lucky bastard.

To say that I love my job would be an understatement. Getting paid to travel is every adventure seeker’s fantasy. The travel bug in me screams in delight every time a new assignment is given.

Recently I went to Siquijor with my American boss.

Ah, just the mere mention of its name can send shivers down the spine of many. I’m not one of them though. Being a huge fan of horror movies and all things scary, I immediately welcomed the opportunity to visit a place known for black magic and the supernatural. Besides, getting lost in a mystical island with a foreigner would make an excellent bedtime story for my future grandchildren.

I heard so many cool things about Siquijor: pristine beaches, the enchanted Balete tree, waterfalls. I was excited to see them all.

The most thrilling part, of course, is the so-called dark side of Siquijor. After all, it wasn’t called “Island of Fire” by the Spanish colonizers for nothing. I wanted an encounter with the occult. I knew it was a business trip but I still wanted to satisfy my craving for an adventure with the unknown. I was excited as hell.

To get there, we traveled by air (Manila to Dumaguete), sea (Dumaguete to Siquijor), and land (Siquijor Pier to Coco Grove). Pretty cool, huh? The private yacht was just an icing on the cake.

When we finally docked in Siquijor, we were immediately captivated by its beauty. Just look at the majestic scenery that greeted us. It took us almost a half a day of traveling but it was worth it.

Prior to the trip, my dad and a few acquaintances kept warning me against accepting food and drinks from strangers while in Siquijor. I don’t know if the warning was because of my insatiable appetite or the fact that people still think that Siquijor is one big spooky place.

Beware of the mambabarang (local voodoo doctor), so they say. I certainly did not heed their warning. In fact, I came looking for the mambabarangs of Siquijor. I was on a prowl.

Our driver cum local tour guide was quick to say that voodoo is no longer practiced in Siquijor. That bummed me out, big time. He went on to say how the young Siquijonons are not interested in black magic and the supernatural. Kids are now more fascinated with modern technology. I mean who can blame them? Texting is awesome. Yes, I am being sarcastic.

Without the mambabarang, we settled for the next big thing. Our tour guide took us to a healer with the American as the willing victim. The healer was a young lady in her early twenties. She claimed her gift of healing was inherited from her lolo (grandfather). Healer asked which part of the American’s body needed some fine tuning. “The back,” said the latter.

Armed with warm water, a bottle, a straw, and a mysterious black stone, the healer began to work her magic on my boss. She started rubbing the bottle with warm water against the American’s back. This went on for about five minutes.

The American looked very uneasy. At that point, I was just glad I wasn’t the volunteer. I had the entire ordeal videotaped. I kinda figured it would be good to use for blackmail, at some point in time.

When it was all over, I asked my boss how the experience was. The American said it felt more like massage than a healing.

There goes your black magic.

Life Is Sweet

After all the whining and bitching, Raft3r finally lands his first (and probably only) travel for 2012.

In a few days, I'll fly to Bohol.

Since this is my third trip to the land of Chocolate Hills and tarsiers, I decided to spice things up a bit.

Consider the following:

- I will be staying at the luxurious Bellevue.

- Goodbye, budget airline. Hello, PAL!

- Cave exploration and ziplining across Loboc River are in order.

The cost for this 3 day adventure may actually feed an entire barangay for a week or so.

Yes, I have to admit. I got carried away. But can you blame me?

After all, this is my first real vacation for the year.

All Falls Down

It's January and no travel plans have been made.

Nothing has been set in stone.

This is alarming. Since by this time, my family should be in Hong Kong. We always celebrate my niece's birthday there. Always.

In 2011, Raft3r traveled like a mad man. Sadly, that won't be the case for this year.

Armed with a limited budget, 2012 will be very boring.

Besides a winter trip to Colorado, I have nothing else.

Indeed, recession has finally hit home.

Jet Lag

Raft3r never gets jet lagged.

For some strange reasons, my sleeping pattern remains the same wherever I am in the world.

That doesn't make me human, right?

Up In The Air

(Hopefully) the last big 2011 adventure for the single guy begins today.

Raft3r flies to Taipei and will spend 12 hours in the air to get to San Francisco.

From SFO, I'll get on another plane to Los Angeles.

In LAX, a friend will be waiting for me and we'll head to Anaheim together.

After a couple of days in Sunny California, a few more friends will join Raft3r for a road trip to Vegas.

We will be rocking the Sin City for 4 days before heading to Denver. A side trip to Arizona is also in order. Colorado will be the last leg on this trip.

That's 4 states in 10 days.

I fly back to San Francisco and return to Manila.

That's the plan. Unless, I decide to stay for good.

Save Me, San Francisco

I have not travelled on my own since 1997.

At that time, I didn't mind at all. I was young and carefree.

I felt I could conquer the world, if I wanted to.

Fast forward to 2011, I am seriously freaking out that I'm all alone in my San Francisco adventure.

I guess aging does that to you.

Your metabolism slows down. Lines appear on your lovely face. Unwanted hair grows out of nowhere. Fear creeps up on you like a thief in the night.

Island In The Sun

Raft3r and the gang went island hopping in Bohol.

We saw one area where a lot of boats were congregated.

Raft3r: "Ano meron don? (What's going on there?)"

Boatman: "Dulpin, ser."

Raft3r: "Ah, dolphin. Let's go there."

Boatman: "Yis, ser. Dulpin. Piro hwag tayu dyan. Sa iba ko kayu dalin. (I'll take you somewhere else.)"

Raft3r and friends exchanged glances.

Where was the boatman taking us? The dolphins were right there.

After 30 minutes, we heard the engine stop. We were in the middle of this huge body of water with no one and nothing in sight.

A few seconds passed and the dolphins appeared!

They were that close to us I could practically smell them. One almost jumped over our little bangka (boat).

Before I could take out my camera, the dolphins were all gone.

Who knew this experience would be so exhilarating.

So Mr. Dulpin, thank you for our very close encounter with the dolphins. You rock!

Another Day In Paradise

Nothing like a bevy of beauties with dark underarms to ruin an otherwise perfect vacation in paradise.

Heading West

Everything that could possibly go wrong with Raft3r's summer US vacation has already happened.

One of our travel buddies backed out. She was the reason why I said yes to this trip in the first place.

Thank you for abandoning Raft3r.

I thought of canceling the trip but my ticket was non-refundable. Re-booking came with several restrictions and a hefty fee.

Damn it.

My (SFO based) best friend who was supposed to be my designated driver for the entire trip has selfishly accepted a job in Australia and will depart the US in April.

Thank you for abandoning Raft3r. That Calvin Klein leather jacket is all MINE.

I now have no place to stay and would need to readjust my travel budget.

Would someone be nice enough to adopt Raft3r while he is in sunny California?

I wash dishes really well.

These Boots Were Made For Walkin'

Hong Kong always remind me of New York.

People are rude. The streets are busy. Everyone is dressed to a T. Food carts abound. Nightlife is awesome.

The best way to explore both cities is by foot. I must have walked a thousand miles in my last Hong Kong trip.

Though walking is a good form of exercise, it also works out one's appetite.

Where Are You Going

Raft3r now knows what's in store for The Deadbeat Club in the second quarter of 2011.

Make a guess.

Lost And Found

I lost my Calvin Klein umbrella in Taiwan.

Technically, it was the airline’s fault.

Raft3r is pissed.

I almost lost my passport in Malaysia.

We got to our hotel almost 4 in the morning. I was tired as hell.

Since we would only be staying in Kuala Lumpur for a day, my travel companions and I decided to just pay for one twin sharing room.

We were a group of five. I was handpicked to just sneak in after my companions register.

As soon as I stepped inside the hotel room, the phone rang. It was Front Desk.

Front Desk: “Is Mr. Raft3r there?”

Female Travel Companion (in a very unconvincing voice): “No.”

Front Desk: “Are you sure Mr. Raft3r from the Philippines is not there?”

Female Travel Companion: “Wait.” (Handed over the phone to male travel companion.)

Male Companion (in a quite nervous tone): “Raft3r is not here. He only accompanied us to this hotel and left right after we checked in. Why?”

Front Desk: “Oh. He left his Philippine passport in the lobby.”

We all heaved a sigh of relief.

On both occasions, I flew Cebu Pacific.

Sometimes being cheap is not that practical.

As God as my witness, I will never fly budget again.

Goodnight, Travel Well

The first quarter of 2011 will be very expensive.

Raft3r flies to Taiwan this month for Yummy Friend's birthday bash.

February is the family's annual pilgrimage trip to Hong Kong.

March is the all boys' adventure to Bohol. Yes, it's no longer Baguio. But the destination still begins with the letter "B."

Since wifey is coming to Manila, I no longer need to fly to Hong Kong or Singapore just to see her. Mother would be pleased.

I wonder what the second quarter would bring?

Monkeys For Nothin' And The Chimps For Free

Raft3r's long weekend was spent in Subic.

We only had one item on the agenda: to look for monkeys.

My posse and I searched high and low for these now elusive creatures.

Only to discover that the only three monkeys in Subic were those riding in Junjun.

Waking Up In Vegas

What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

How come Raft3r’s previous trip to Sin City wasn’t as adventurous as the one depicted on The Hangover?

Consider the following:

1. Marriage to a stripper;
2. A tiger trapped inside a hotel villa;
3. Mike Tyson singing along to a Phil Collins’ hit;
4. Stun gun demonstration;
5. A majorly pissed and totally naked Chinese gay guy;
6. Fat Jesus; and
7. Case of the missing groom.

…And where’s the masturbating baby when you need him?

I Can See Clearly Now

Malaysia through Raft3r’s eyes:

- Kuala Lumpur is a very progressive city.
- Long and winding roads abound. Nausea alert.
- No pork in the menu.
- Reckless cab drivers. That’s just the way I like them.
- Curry is everywhere.
- There is no shortage of deodorant in stores but no one seems to be using them.

Pack Your Bags

The kids and I are off to another adventure.

Since my younger niece celebrated her birthday in Hong Kong Disneyland, it is but fair for her elder sister to fly to another country for her special day.

The Deadbeat Club heads to Malaysia next month!

It is my first time in Genting and I’m excited as hell.

On my last travel, I lost a car. What will I lose next?
